The Warlord Class[edit | edit source]

Warlord (Minor Class)[edit | edit source]

The warlord class allows you to command your comrades on the battlefield and give them the advantage they need to push them toward victory. People with this class are often called Tacticians or Standard Bearers. The warlord has two notable features. Firstly, they can use their warlord level instead of their scouting level for the sake of calculating initiative. Secondly, stratagems. stratagems do not require any MP or other costs, and its area of effect is increased by your total reputation. The more time you spend on assessing the situation, the more effective it will be, so it will be especially valuable in long-term battles.

Term: Tactician

The term "Tactician" will be used to refer to characters who have learned the Warlord Class and use Stratagems to affect the outcomes of battles.

Warlords are proficient in:

  • Initiative

Stratagems[edit | edit source]

Stratagems are techniques for conveying effective and precise commands to one's comrades, using the certainty and recognition that comes with honor. It is believed that the warlord's voice cuts through the very mana in the air, making the transmission of command more reliable. stratagems are basically focused on commanding allies and enhancing their combat capabilities. Therefore, they have no effect on the enemy at all. Because stratagems aren’t magic, they do not respond to【Sense Magic】 and the effect can not be canceled by【Dispel Magic】and other magical abilities. Each time a character gains a level in warlord, he or she can choose a stratagem from the list and learn it. Each time a character takes a level in Warlord, they may choose one stratagem from the following list, and learn that stratagem. Some stratagems require a minimum Warlord level in order to learn, and cannot be learned by those Warlords of lower level. For example, a 5th Level Warlord would know five different stratagems, and would be able to learn any stratagem that requires a 5th level or lower Warlord. You do not need any MP to a stratagem. However, you will need to wear a badge called the Strategist Insignia. The insignia can be worn on any equipment slot. In addition, warlords can use a type of spear called the "Banner Spear".

Using Stratagems[edit | edit source]

You can only use stratagems during battle. This is because their effect is in accordance with the ever-changing battlefield, and is not a useful ability in peacetime. In addition, stratagems use "minor actions". No check is required, the effect is automatically applied. The check result is treated as "0". It is not possible to use a major action to increase that success value. In principle, you can only use one stratagem per round. To use a stratagem, you need to be able to speak. Since their power comes from you being able to efficiently mobilize allies with your voice, you cannot omit speech, even if you use Nightmare's [Alternate Form]. Additionally, Gestures are not required, so Stratagems can be performed regardless of movement method.

The Purpose of Stratagems
Stratagems are techniques that allow your allies to fight more efficiently through effective leadership. As such, their effect is limited to allies, with the exception of the Tactician that used the Stratagem himself. The term "ally" refers to any target that the Tactician deems to be an ally. If the Tactician has more than one section, none of them can be the target of the Stratagem. Also, you must be within direct hearing range of the Tactician to receive the effects of the stratagem. Using magic or items that allow you to hear the stratagem from a remote location, such as messengers, [Doll Sight], or Calling Studs, will not have any effect.

Hearing, Intelligence, and Language
Since stratagems are verbal in nature, they cannot be effective on targets that lack or have lost their hearing. Also, targets that are not at least of Low Intellect will not be able to understand the commands and therefore cannot be affected. In addition, the stratagem will not work on targets who do not speak your language. You can use multiple languages at the same time, so if the Tactician knows all the languages required, the stratagem will work fine.

Handling Mounts
The Tactician's mount will be affected by the stratagem, as long as it can hear, has at least low intellect and understands the language used. Also, if the target is an ally (other than the Tactician himself), the stratagem will also work on their mount (even if it is a magical motorcycle, etc.) as long as the rider meets the above conditions.

Stratagems Area of Effect
The area of effect of the Stratagem is a circle centered on the Tactician, and varies depending on the total reputation of the Warlord using it. Please refer to the table below.

Reputation Effective range (Radius)
0〜20 6m
21〜50 10m
51〜100 15m
101〜200 20m
201〜500 30m
501〜1000 50m
1001〜2000 100m
2001〜5000 500m
5001〜 The entire battlefield

Effect Duration of Stratagems
With a few exceptions, all stratagems have a duration of 3 minutes (18 rounds). If the Tactician wishes, they can end the effect with a minor action. In this case, the effect ends for everyone who was targeted. If the Tactician is incapacitated (stunned, asleep, petrified, dead, etc.), all effects are lost, even if they are still in effect.

Resisting a Stratagem
Any target with the will to resist against the stratagem will automatically succeed in resisting. They then can resume use from a Rank 1 stratagem. Characters who have used an enlightenment effect within 6 rounds will also regain the right to use the enlightenment effect again.

Overlapping Stratagems
Only one stratagem can be active on a single target at a time. This is even if it has a different name, or was used by a different Tacticians. Basically, the stratagem that is used later will take priority. If another character uses a stratagem, the effect of the character with the higher total reputation will take precedence. If the two characters have the same total reputation, the character with the higher Tactician level will take priority. If they are the same, the Intelligence values are compared. If they are still tied, they roll 2d and the character with the higher roll takes priority. The character with the higher roll takes precedence.

Stratagems and Battle Hymn used together
Stratagems and the Level 7 Divine Spell [Battle Hymn] use "sounds" to function, however stratagems can be mixed with Spellsongs without issue. So, it is possible for the same character to use a stratagem and a Spellsong or a Battle Hymn at the same time.

Ranks and Types of Stratagems[edit | edit source]

There are two important concepts in Stratagems: "Rank" and "Type". "Rank" indicates the strength of the stratagem. By starting with a lower-ranked Stratagem and gradually working your way up to a higher-ranked one, you can achieve a higher potency. No matter how high a level Tactician you are, you can't just suddenly start with a high-ranked stratagem. You have to work up to it. "Type" is a name that distinguishes between the kinds of Stratagems. There are four types: Attack, Evasion, Defense, and Resistance. In addition to these, there are "basic" and "independent" types. They work as follows.

「Attack」:Increases mainly physical damage.
「Evasion」:Increases evasion against physical attacks.
「Defense」:Increases protection point damage reduction.
「Resistance」:Increases resistance.
「Basic」:Increases mobility. Only one rank exists, can be upgraded to other types.
「Independent」:Independent stratagem that doesn’t belong to any other type. It cannot be increased in rank.

Working through Stratagem Ranks
Each stratagem has its own "Rank".
Whenever you use a Stratagem, you must start with a "Rank 1" stratagem. You can use a "Rank 2" stratagem next, given both have the same Type. This cancels out any Rank 1 stratagem used by the same tactician, and overrides it with the rank 2 effect. Similarly, in the next round, you can use a rank 3 stratagem. The maximum rank is 5. Of course, Stratagems of the same Rank or lower can be also used. Please note that all stratagems classified as "Basic" Rank 1. Those can be overridden by Rank 2 Stratagems of any other type.

Enlightenment Effect
In addition to the standard effects, Rank 4 Stratagems have an "Enlightenment Effect" listed. A character who had been the target of a Rank 1 Stratagem from a given Tactician will be entitled to this Enlightenment effect. If a character is the target of a rank 4 Stratagem by a Tactician, he or she can then declare the enlightenment effect at will. Once the declaration is made, the enlightenment effect will be applied according to the Stratagem description. Once a character has been enlightened, they lose the right to the enlightening effect. If the character becomes the target of a Rank 1 Stratagem by the Tactician again (i.e., if the Tactician starts over from a Rank 1 Stratagem), they will gain that right again. As a general rule, whether or not to exert an enlightenment effect depends on the target, but the enlightenment effects of [Flowing Fortunes IV: Lingering Shadow] and [Ironclad Defense IV: Indomitable] are automatically used when the conditions are met. For each character, you either have the right to activate the effect or you don't. If you do not activate it, and your Tactician reverts to a Rank 1 Stratagem, you cannot carry it over and retain it twice, so be mindful of that.

Change to a different Type of Stratagem
There may be times when the battlefield changes and you are forced to use a different type of Stratagem. In that case, you can use a different type of Stratagem, as long as it is of a rank lower than the one currently in effect. Of course, you can always reset and use a Rank 1 Stratagem. (e.g., if a Rank 3 attack Stratagem is in effect, any Stratagem of Rank 2 or lower can be used.)

Examples of Rank Increases[edit | edit source]

You must always start with a Rank 1 Stratagem. For example, let's say that a character with 10th level Warlord class has mastered the rank 5 attack Stratagem,【Surging Offense V: Hellfire】. However, this Stratagem cannot be used immediately after the start of battle. Please refer to the following steps.
Round 1
Rank 1 Stratagem [Surging Offense I] used. The designated ally's physical damage is increased by +2 and evasion is decreased by -1.
Round 2
Rank 2 Stratagem [Surging Offense II: Whirlwind] used. The effect of [Surging Offense I] is canceled, and the target's damage is increased by +1.
Round 3
Rank 3 Stratagem [Surging Offense III: Roaring Flame] used. The effect of [Surging Offense II: Whirlwind] is canceled and the target's physical damage is increased by +3.
Round 4
Rank 4 Stratagem [Surging Offense IV: Blaze] used. The target's physical damage is increased by +3, and they gain the ability to use the enlightenment effect (instantaneous additional physical damage of +3).
Round 5
Rank 5 Stratagem [Surging Offense V: Hellfire] can be used. However, using this Stratagem cancels the effect of [Surging Offense IV: Flame], so don't use it until you need it.
Round 6
The enlightenment effect (Physical damage +3) is used by one of the allies. Combined with the original effect, +6 damage!
The enlightenment effect will disappear for that target. However, the original effect (Physical Damage +3) is still in effect. The other target retains the right to use the enlightenment effect.
Round 7
Used [Surging Offense V: Hellfire]. The effect of [Surging Offense IV: Flame] is canceled, and the physical damage of all targets is increased by +8 once.
Round 8
The Combo is reset, resume using a Rank 1 Stratagem; Characters who used an enlightenment effect in Round 6 will also regain the right to use it.
As shown in the example above, the fifth rank Stratagem used has a temporary effect. Therefore, please note that after using Rank 5, there will be no more lasting effects and you must reset and start over by using a Rank 1 Stratagem.

Note: Receiving the effects of a Stratagem from the middle[edit | edit source]

This situation can occur for a number of reasons, such as becoming the target of a Stratagem whose rank has already increased - moving in from outside the range. For the user, the rank of the Stratagem must be increased in order, but for the ally receiving the effect, that is irrelevant. So it is possible to receive the effect of a higher rank Stratagem as soon as you wish. Therefore, you can choose to ignore all low-ranked Stratagems and only receive their effects when they reach a higher rank. However, don't forget that each Stratagem has a duration. Stratagems are not constant, so if you come in later and wish the effect would last longer, you will not get the benefit. Make sure to ask each tactician to use the same (or higher) rank of Stratagem.
